Materials
Yarn: Medium weight (size 4) soft velvet yarn — Bernat Baby Velvet, 1 skein
Hook: Size G / 4.25mm, or size needed to obtain gauge
Notions: Yarn needle for sewing the seam
Gauge
12 dc × 7 rows = 4" × 4"
One size fits most adults. Finished circumference: approx. 20". Finished width: approx. 5".
Abbreviations
Ch = chain
St = stitch
Dc = double crochet
Pattern Instructions
Step 1 — Foundation Chain
With your velvet yarn and size G hook, chain 66. Tip: If you need a larger or smaller circumference, add or subtract a few chains in multiples of 1.
Step 2 — Row 1
Double crochet (dc) into the 4th chain from the hook (the turning chain counts as a dc stitch now and throughout). Dc in each of the remaining 62 chains to the end of the row. 64 dc total.
Step 3 — Row 2
Chain 3, TURN. Dc in each of the next 62 stitches, then dc in the top of the last turning chain. 64 dc total.
Step 4 — Rows 3–8
Repeat Step 3 (Row 2) for rows 3 through 8. Count your stitches at the end of each row to confirm you have 64 dc total. The velvet yarn is plush and can make it tricky to see stitches — take your time!
Step 5 — Fasten Off
Fasten off and leave a long tail (at least 12") for sewing the center seam.
Finishing: Center Twist Knot & Seam
Step 6 — Fold the headband in half lengthwise and place the top end halfway down the width of the band.
Step 7 — Fold the bottom end under and bring it to the back of the seam.
Step 8 — Take the topmost corner and fold it down.
Step 9 — The seam should now look like two linked U shapes — this is your twist knot!
Step 10 — Using your yarn needle and the long tail, sew the seam together securely. Weave in all ends.
Care Instructions
Handwash in cold water using a mild detergent, or place in a small garment bag and wash on a gentle cycle. Lay flat to air dry. Never put crochet items in the dryer — especially velvet yarn, which can lose its softness with heat.
