Crocheting Baby Gifts: A Labor of Love
There's something truly magical about handmade baby gifts. When you crochet something for a newborn, you're not just creating a practical item—you're stitching love, care, and countless hours of creativity into something that will be treasured for years to come. Baby hats are the perfect gift for new parents: they're practical, adorable, quick to make, and babies genuinely need them to stay warm. Plus, there's nothing quite like seeing a tiny human wearing something you made with your own two hands.

Why Koalas Make the Cutest Baby Hats
If you're looking for an irresistibly cute design, look no further than a koala baby hat. Koalas are nature's sleepiest creatures—they spend up to 22 hours a day napping—which makes them the perfect inspiration for a cozy baby hat. Their round ears, sweet face, and gentle expression translate beautifully into crochet, and babies in koala hats are absolutely precious. This pattern is beginner-friendly and works up quickly, making it ideal for gift-giving.

What You'll Need
Yarn: Medium weight 4 worsted acrylic yarn in the following amounts:
- Gray – 3 oz.
- Blue – 1 oz.
- Black – 1 oz.
- White – 1 oz.
Hook: Size G/4.25mm (or size needed to obtain gauge)
Extras: Yarn or tapestry needle for sewing and assembly
Finished Size: One size fits most newborns 0–3 months old. Circumference measures approximately 12 inches (30 cm).
Gauge: 2" × 2" = 8 sts × 3 dc rows

Abbreviations You'll Use
- Ch = chain
- Slst = slip stitch
- Sc = single crochet
- Hdc = half double crochet
- Dc = double crochet
Important Note: In rounds 8–10, you'll be working in the horizontal back loops of the previous round of hdc stitches. This creates a nice texture and helps define the hat's shape.
Let's Make the Hat!
You'll be working in the round throughout this pattern. Keep working in the same direction as you go—don't turn your work.
Round 1: Make a magic circle (or slip knot circle), chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet), then make 9 more double crochets into the circle. Slip stitch to the top of your chain 3 to join the round. You now have 10 double crochets total.
Round 2: Chain 3 and double crochet into the same stitch, then make 2 double crochets in the next stitch and in every stitch around the circle. Slip stitch to the top of your chain 3 to join. You now have 20 double crochets total.
Round 3: Repeat Round 2. You now have 40 double crochets total.
Round 4: Chain 3, then double crochet in the next stitch and in every stitch around. Slip stitch to the top of your chain 3 to join. You still have 40 double crochets total.
Rounds 5–6: Repeat Round 4 two more times. Your hat is starting to take shape!
Round 7: Time to add color! Switch to your blue yarn. Chain 2 (this counts as your first half double crochet), then half double crochet in the next stitch and in every stitch around. Slip stitch to the top of your chain 2 to join. You have 40 half double crochets total.
Rounds 8–9: Chain 2, then half double crochet in the horizontal back loop of each of the 40 half double crochets around. Important: Do not slip stitch to join this round—just continue to the next round.
Round 10: Single crochet in the horizontal back loop of each of the 40 half double crochets around. Slip stitch into the last back loop. Fasten off and weave in your ends. Your hat base is complete!
Making the Nose
Using black yarn, chain 6. Make 5 double crochets into the 4th chain from your hook, then double crochet in the next chain. Make 5 more double crochets into the last chain stitch. Working on the opposite side of your foundation chain, double crochet into the next stitch, then slip stitch to the top of your first turning chain to join. Fasten off. You have 12 double crochets total.
Sew the nose onto your hat by positioning it so that half sits on the blue section and half sits on the gray section. This creates a cute, balanced look.
Making the Eyes (Make 2)
Using black yarn, make a magic circle. Chain 1, then make 9 single crochets into the circle. Slip stitch to the first single crochet to join. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Sew both eyes onto the hat, positioning them above the nose. Using white yarn, make a small slanted stitch on each eye for a highlight—this brings the eyes to life and makes the koala look sweet and awake.
Making the Ears (Make 2)
Using white yarn, make a magic circle. Chain 4, then make 9 double crochets into the circle. Slip stitch to the top of your chain 4 to join.
Switch to gray yarn. Chain 3, then make 2 double crochets in the back loop of each of the next 7 double crochets. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Sew both ears onto the top sides of the hat. If you want to add extra flair, you can make small pom poms and use those as ears instead—it's a fun variation!
Finishing Touches
Weave in all remaining yarn ends. Your adorable koala baby hat is now complete and ready to gift!
Care Instructions
Handwash the hat in cold water using mild detergent, or place it in a small garment bag and wash on a gentle cycle. Lay the hat flat to air dry. Never put crochet items in the dryer, as heat can damage the yarn and the hat's shape.
