Embrace Hygge with a Cozy Crochet Winter Beanie
There's a Danish word that perfectly captures the essence of winter comfort: hygge (pronounced "hoo-gah"). It's more than just coziness—it's about creating warmth, contentment, and intimate moments during the cold months. Hygge is candlelit evenings, soft blankets, warm drinks, and handmade treasures that wrap you in comfort. This crochet winter beanie embodies hygge in every stitch. Crafted in soft, bulky yarn with a gentle pearl tone, it's the perfect accessory to complete your cozy winter ritual.

Step 1: Create the Band
Row 1: Chain 10. Work a double crochet in the 4th chain from your hook (the chain 3 counts as your first double crochet). Double crochet in each of the next 6 stitches to the end. You should have 8 double crochets total.
Row 2: Chain 3 and turn. Work a front post double crochet around the next 6 double crochet stitches and around the last turning chain from the previous row.
Rows 3–32: Repeat Row 2 thirty times. You're building the ribbed band that will form the base of your hat.
Finishing the Band: Slip stitch the two ends of the band together to form a circle. This creates the snug fit around your head.
Step 2: Build the Body
Now you'll switch to working in rounds instead of rows. Keep moving in the same direction for each round—don't turn your work. You'll be working around the sides and turning chains of the band you just created.
Round 1: Chain 1. Work 2 single crochets in the next stitch and in each double crochet side post and turning chain as you go around the band. Slip stitch to the first single crochet to join. You should have 64 single crochets total.
Rounds 2–3: Chain 2 (this counts as a single crochet). Single crochet in the next stitch and in each stitch around. Slip stitch to the top of your chain 2 to join.
Round 4: Chain 3. Work a back post double crochet around the next 3 stitches, then a front post double crochet around the next stitch. Repeat this pattern 14 more times. Finish with a back post double crochet in the next 3 stitches. Insert your hook behind the chain 3 space and slip stitch into it to join.
Round 5: Repeat Round 4.
Rounds 6–8: Repeat Rounds 2–3 (the single crochet rounds).
Rounds 9–10: Repeat Round 4 (the textured rounds).
Rounds 11–15: Repeat Rounds 6–10. You're building the height and texture of your beanie.
Rounds 16–18: Repeat Round 2 (single crochet rounds).
Step 3: Close the Top
Fasten off, leaving a long tail of yarn for sewing.
Flip your hat inside out so the wrong side is facing outward. Mark 8 equal points around the top opening. Sew these points together, gathering the top into a neat closure. Use the image in your pattern as a guide. Fasten off securely and weave in any remaining ends.
Turn your beanie right-side out, and you're done!
