What You'll Need
Yarn: Medium worsted weight (size 4) acrylic yarn, 3 oz. (Example: Red Heart Super Saver in Café Latte)
Crochet Hook: Size G-6 / 4.25mm
Other Materials: One 1-inch diameter button, yarn needle for weaving in ends

Special Stitch: Crossed Double Crochet
Skip one stitch, then work a double crochet in the next stitch. Go back and work a double crochet in the skipped stitch to the right.
Step-by-Step Instructions
The Bottom (Rounds 1–3)
Round 1: Create a magic circle or slip knot circle. Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet). Work 9 more double crochets into the circle for a total of 10. Join with a slip stitch to the top of your starting chain 3.
Round 2: Chain 3, then work 2 double crochets in the same space. Work 2 double crochets in each stitch around the circle. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 3. You now have 20 double crochets total.
Round 3: Chain 2 (this counts as your first single crochet). Work 1 single crochet in the same space. Then alternate: 1 single crochet, then 2 single crochets in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern all the way around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 2. You now have 30 single crochets total.
The Body (Rounds 4–17)
Round 4: Chain 2. Working in the back loops only, single crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 2. (30 single crochets)
Round 5: Chain 4 (this counts as a double crochet plus a chain 1 space). Skip the next stitch. Work a double crochet in the next stitch, chain 1, skip the next stitch. Repeat this pattern around the entire round. Join with a slip stitch to the third chain of your starting chain 4. You now have 15 double crochet and chain 1 spaces.
Round 6: Chain 3, then work a double crochet into the chain 1 space to the right (this creates your first crossed double crochet). Continue working crossed double crochets over the remaining 14 double crochet and chain 1 spaces. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 3.
Round 7: Chain 2. Single crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 2. (30 single crochets)
Rounds 8–16: Repeat rounds 5, 6, and 7 three more times (this creates the textured body of the holder).
Round 17: Repeat round 7 once more.
The Strap (Rows 1–57)
Row 1: Chain 2, single crochet in the next 6 stitches. Turn your work.
Row 2: Chain 3 (counts as your first double crochet), double crochet in the next 5 stitches. Turn.
Rows 3–56: Chain 3 (always count this as your first double crochet), double crochet in the next 4 stitches, then double crochet in the last turning chain. You'll have 6 double crochets total in each row. Continue until your strap measures 38 inches long. Turn after each row.
Row 57: Chain 2, single crochet in each stitch across. Fasten off and weave in your yarn tail.
Finishing Touches
Close the Bottom: Pull the magic circle tight at the bottom of your holder. Tie off and weave in all yarn ends.
Attach the Button: Sew the 1-inch button to the opposite side of where the strap begins, so the strap can wrap around and button securely.
Add the Fringes: Cut 36 pieces of yarn, each 12 inches long. (Tip: Wrap yarn around a ruler lengthwise for quick, even measuring.) Using two strands at a time, slip stitch the fringe into the single crochets below the chain 1 spaces at the bottom of the holder. Add fringes to the end of the strap as well for a festive look.
