Why Crochet Potholders Make Perfect Gifts and Seasonal Décor
Handmade crochet potholders are more than just practical kitchen essentials—they're thoughtful gifts that bring warmth and personality to any home. Whether you're crafting for the upcoming season or looking for a quick project to give to friends and family, a cozy potholder is always appreciated. This fall pumpkin potholder combines functionality with festive charm, making it ideal for seasonal décor or as a heartfelt gift. For hot pads that will actually protect hands from heat, natural fiber yarns like cotton or linen work best. However, if you're creating these primarily for decoration or gifting to someone who loves fall aesthetics, acrylic yarn is a budget-friendly and durable option that holds its shape beautifully.

Skill Level: Easy
Materials
Yarn: Medium worsted weight size 4, acrylic yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver Solids.
Color A: Pumpkin orange, 3 oz
Color B: Tea Leaf Green, 1 oz
Hook: Size G/ 4.25mm
Extra: Tapestry needle or yarn needle for sewing.
Gauge
The finished project will measure approximately 7 inches tall and 6 inches wide. 4"X4" = 8 rounds X 12 dc sts.
Abbreviations
Slst = slip stitch
Ch = chain
Sc = single crochet
Dc = double crochet
Fpdc = front post double crochet
Pumpkin body
Foundation round: Ch 42, dc in 4th ch from hook (turn ch counts as a dc st), dc in each remaining st. Being careful not to twist, join the two ends together to form a circle by making a slst in top of turning ch. 40 dc total.
Round 2: Continue working in the round in the same direction after each round.
Ch 3 (counts as a dc st now and throughout), dc in next 2, Fpdc in next, * dc in next 3, Fpdc in next, repeat from * working all the way around, slst to top of ch 3 to join. 40 dc total.
Rnds 3-14: Repeat round 2. Leave a long tail end for sewing. Fasten off.
Pumpkin Stem
Round 1: Make a magic circle/slipknot circle, ch 1, 6 sc into circle.
Rnd 2: 2 sc into each of the next 6 sc sts.
Rnd 3-8: 1 sc in each st around,
Row 9 (vine): Ch 16, dc in 4th ch from hook, 3 dc in each remaining ch st, this will create a curly vine, slst onto the stem. Leave a long tail end for sewing and fasten off.
Fold stem in half and sew the bottom opening shut.
Assembly
Step 1: Unfold the pumpkin body so that the Wrong Side is facing outwards (inside out). Lay the pumpkin flat against a surface.
Step 2: Tuck in the two bottom sides about ½ an inch and sew the bottom opening shut. See picture below.
Step 3: Fold pumpkin body so the Right Side is facing outwards.
Step 4: Sew stem onto the middle of the top opening of pumpkin body.
Step 5: Sew together the top opening by stitching together every Fpdc st and cinch together. Finally, sew the seam horizontally to finish.
