Special Stitch

Ch 3 Picot: Chain 3, insert hook down through the top of the previous double crochet, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Part 1: The Band

Tip: Use a G/4.25mm hook for Toddler size, and an I/5.50mm hook for Child and Adult sizes. The headband will relax after a few wears, so snug is good!

Row 1: Ch 10. Hdc in the 4th ch from hook (the turning ch counts as a hdc throughout the band). Hdc in each remaining stitch to the end. 8 hdc total.

Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as a hdc throughout), TURN. Working in the back loops only, hdc in the next 6 hdc back loops, then hdc in the top of the last turning ch. 8 hdc total.

Rows 3–30 (Toddler & Child) / Rows 3–33 (Adult): Repeat Row 2.

Once you've reached the desired length, slip stitch the two ends of the band together to form a circle.

Part 2: The Crown Top

You'll now work in the round rather than rows. Do not turn your work — keep working in the same direction for each round. You'll be working into the side posts and turning chains along the edge of the band.

Round 1: Join yarn in any side post or turning ch along the band edge. Make 2 sc in each hdc side post and in each turning ch all the way around. Slst to the first sc to join. 60 sc total (Toddler/Child) | 66 sc total (Adult).

Round 2 — Crown Points:

Step 1: Ch 2 (counts as a sc).

Step 2: Skip the next 3 sts, make 3 dc in the next st.

Step 3: Work a Ch 3 Picot in the top of the 3rd dc. (This creates the tip of the crown point!)

Step 4: Cross back over and make 3 dc in the 2nd skipped st.

Step 5: Skip 1 st, sc in the next st.

Repeat Steps 2–5 nine more times (ten times for Adult size), or until you reach the end of the round. Slst to the top of the ch 2 to join. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
