What You'll Need
Yarn: Medium worsted weight size 4, 100% cotton yarn (such as Peaches and Creme)
Hook: Size G/4.25mm
Finished Size: Approximately 4.5 inches in diameter
Abbreviations at a Glance
- Slst = slip stitch
- Ch = chain
- Sc = single crochet
- Dc = double crochet
- dc5tog = double crochet 5 together
- Yo = yarn over
- Sp = space
Special Stitch: dc5tog
Yarn over, insert into the next dc, yarn over and draw a loop through, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook. Repeat this 4 more times until you have 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw through all loops at once to complete the stitch.
Create Your Foundation Ring
Chain 4 stitches, then slip stitch into the first chain to join and form a ring. (You can use a magic ring instead if you prefer.)
Round 1 – Build Your Base
Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet). Make 2 more double crochets into the ring, then chain 2. Repeat this pattern 4 more times: 3 double crochets into the ring, chain 2. Slip stitch to the top of your starting chain 3 to join the round.
You should now have 6 double crochet clusters with 6 chain-2 spaces between them.
Round 2 – Add Dimension
Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet). Make 3 double crochets in the next double crochet, then 1 double crochet in the following double crochet. Chain 2 and skip the chain-2 space.
Repeat this pattern 4 more times: 1 double crochet in the next stitch, 3 double crochets in the next, 1 double crochet in the next, chain 2, skip the chain-2 space. Slip stitch to the top of your beginning chain 3 to join.
Round 3 – Create the Flower Petals
Chain 2. Double crochet 4 together using the next 4 double crochets, then chain 3. Make 1 double crochet into the chain-2 space.
Repeat this pattern 4 more times: chain 3, double crochet 5 together using the next 5 double crochets, chain 3, 1 double crochet in the chain-2 space. Chain 3 one final time and slip stitch to the top of your first dc4tog stitch to join.
Round 4 – Finish the Edges
Chain 2 (counts as a single crochet). Make 5 single crochets into the next chain-3 space, then 1 single crochet in the top of the next double crochet. Make 5 single crochets in the next chain-3 space, then 1 single crochet in the top of the next dc5tog stitch. Repeat this pattern around the entire round, omitting the last single crochet. Slip stitch to the top of your beginning chain 2. Fasten off and weave in your ends.
Add Fringes (Optional)
Wrap yarn lengthwise around a ruler about 12 times. Cut the yarn into 12-inch strands, then cut each strand in half to create 6-inch pieces. Take 2–3 strands together and slip stitch them onto your mug rug, skipping 5 single crochet stitches between each fringe. Trim the fringes to your desired length.
